The 2013 Magic and Meaning Conference

The Magic and Meaning Conference is an annual gathering of magicians, scholars, public speakers, professionals from many arenas, and performers of diverse arts. It is for anyone who loves magic, storytelling, the philosophy of magic, and learning to think about magic in new ways.  We limit attendence to 52 people (the number of cards in a deck) so we can create a friendly, interactive, hands-on community of learning and performing. 

The 2013 conference will feature keynote presentations by Max Maven and Max Howard. Our good friend Kenton Knepper will be back to speak and perform, as will the Magic & Mystery School Faculty: Jeff McBride, Eugene Burger, Robert E. Neale, Larry Hass, Bryce Kuhlman, Tobias Beckwith, and George Parker. As in previous years, the Conference also will feature a large number of presentations and performances by Conference attendees. To submit a proposal, please see the 2013 “Call for Presentations and Performances."

In addition to the Conference itself, participants are also invited to attend Jeff McBride’s WONDERGROUND and two of the Las Vegas Magickal community's annual events: THE LAS VEGAS WITCHES AND WIZARDS BALL and BONE DANCE — an evening of storytelling, drumming, and dancing around a sacred fire circle in the Nevada desert!

A Mystery School Workbook

This four-day event is specially designed for physicians and other health care providers. Its goal is to explore, in a hands-on way, the fascinating relationship between the medical arts and the magical arts.
 
The course is taught by Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger, two of the world’s leading magicians and the founders of the McBride Magic & Mystery School. They will be joined by Ricardo Rosenkranz, M.D., who has pioneered a revolutionary Magic and Medicine teaching program at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and Lawrence Hass, Ph.D., a philosopher and a magician who founded the internationally-celebrated educational program, The Theory and Art of Magic.
 
The course will cover many areas of theoretical interest, such as the history of the relationship between magic and medicine, the importance of ritual, and the place of magical art in human life. However, the primary focus of the educational experience is on practice—on how the powerful skills of performance magicians can enhance the interactions between providers and patients, and thus yield better outcomes in healing relationships.
 
Some examples of additional topics that will be studied:

• The shared DNA of magicians and doctors
• The importance of performative structures for healing outcomes
• Relationship-building and collaborative practices for experiential success
• What doctors and health care professionals have to learn from magicians

If you are looking for detailed, personal instruction in an intimate and safe setting, consider attending a McBride Master Class, the premiere learning experience in magic.

The McBride Master Class is limited to a small group of students. Although there is no pressure to perform, many students choose to present their act (or a magical piece they are working on) for expert direction from Jeff, Eugene, and the other faculty, who are all committed to helping you attain new levels of excellence with your magic. Beyond this performance session, Master Class includes teaching units on topics of central importance to your magic and magic career and many opportunities for personal instruction. This is the only event in the world of magic that focuses on you and your needs as a magician.

For those students who choose not to perform, the Master Class process will still be deeply educational; they will learn from witnessing the learning of others. And they will equally enjoy the teaching units and times for personal instruction.

In reply to popular demand, the McBride Magic & Mystery School is now offering 7-Day Master Classes—learning experiences that last for a full seven days. This creates more time with Jeff and Eugene, and it allows the faculty to extend and intensify all the educational aspects of the Class. It also helps forge a deeper community among the participants. Indeed, you will make friendships at Master Class that promise to last for years. The seven-day class also includes a ticket for a major Las Vegas show, such as Mac King, and relaxed time for questions with the star.

Students’ spouses, parents, or other guests are invited to the Opening Night Party and Show at Jeff McBride's House of Mystery. Family members and guests may also choose to purchase tickets and attend the Las Vegas show we will attend as a group. When Master Class is in session, family members and guests will have no shortage finding exciting things to do in Las Vegas; even so we will distribute a document that includes a number of surprising and, in some cases, inexpensive options.
